JOB SUMMARY Under the general supervision of the department supervisor, the Charge Nurse is responsible for the assessment, coordination, implementation, and evaluation of the delivery of safe and effective patient-centered care. Writes and educates staff on standard of work. Plans and organizes activities and department operations to ensure patient needs are met in accordance with physician instruction and hospital policy. Act as a physician liaison. Supports and empowers staff to embrace SMH mission and goals. Provides direct patient care as needed. Consults other departments, as appropriate, to collaborate in patient care and provide for an interdisciplinary approach.

ESSENTIAL DUTIES/RESPONSIBILITIES

Leader Duties and Responsibilities Include:

  • Along with department manager, provides feedback for orientation and annual performance appraisals and clinical competency assessment, ensuring regular feedback, coaching, and communication with employees.

  • Ensures high level of performance standards and achievement to meet organization needs and business goals.

  • Provides development opportunities for staff to broaden and enhance skills and abilities.

  • Coordinates initial training of new employees and ongoing training, as required.

  • Promotes an environment that fosters teamwork and commitment to satisfy customer requirements.

  • With manager, participates in aspects of the employment cycle.

General Duties:

  • Formulates a teaching plan based upon identified learning needs of staff and evaluates effectiveness of their learning.

  • Maintains a good working relationship both within the department and with other departments.

  • Provides general direction to department staff for daily operations, staffing, clinical activities, huddles, safety, and quality matters.

  • Assists in the development of performance improvement/LEAN activities. Educates staff on the PI process. Participates in PI data collection, indicator development, and evaluation criteria, etc. Maintains appropriate quality control programs.

  • Participates in the development, implementation, review, and revision of departmental policies and procedures.

  • Ensures all rules and regulations are observed by employees, to include overall corporate compliance and compliance with JCAHO standards.

  • Implements and monitors adherence to evidence based clinical nursing practice consistent with nursing research, organizational, and national practice standards.

  • Identifies gaps and collaborates with manager to initiate strategies to improve patient care, patient satisfaction, and employee satisfaction.

  • Identifies needs and sets goals for own growth and development; meets all mandatory organizational and departmental requirements.

  • Supports orientation and in-service training activities for nursing ensuring compliance with annual educational, safety, and regulatory requirements consistent with hospital policy and procedures.

  • Will provide direct and indirect patient care in the department setting when patient census and staffing require.

  • Takes on-call, as required.

Professional Practice:

  • Adheres to organizational policies and procedures.

  • Adheres to professional guidelines for practice such as defined by the Wyoming State Board of Nursing, the American Nurses Association ANA and any department specific organization.

  • Collaborates with other departments in a professional manner as needed to provide patient-centered care.

  • Demonstrates effective communication, conflict resolution, team building, and leadership skills.

  • Participates in updating and upholding standards of practice and be a role model to others for maintaining standards of care.

Quality:

  • Performs all aspects of patient care in an environment that optimizes patient safety and reduces the likelihood of medical/health care errors.

  • Ability to perform a head-to-toe assessment on all patients and reassessments as per policy and specific to unit age specific populations.

  • Ability to formulate and revise an individualized plan of care as indicated by the patient’s response to treatment. Evaluates overall plan daily for effectiveness.

  • Ability to adequately assess and reassess pain. Utilizes appropriate pain management techniques including non- pharmacological techniques. Includes patient and family in all aspects of pain management through on-going education about pain, assessment, treatment and common barriers to adequate management.

  • Documentation meets current standards and policies.

  • Demonstrates ability to perform treatments and provide services within scope of practice.

  • Communicates appropriately and clearly to all health care team members.

  • Consults other departments as appropriate to provide for an interdisciplinary approach to the patient’s needs.

  • Provides care appropriate to disease condition and age of the patient.

  • Demonstrates an ability to assist physicians with procedures and performs services requiring technical and manual skills.

  • Reports significant events such as near misses, adverse events, patient/family complaints, and any situation that affects the safe delivery of patient-centered care in a timely manner.

  • Ensures that all infection control precautions and procedures are followed in the department.

Service:

  • Treats patients and their families with respect and dignity. Identifies and addresses psychosocial, cultural, ethnic and religious/spiritual needs of patients and their families.

  • Functions as liaison between the patient/family, physicians, other healthcare providers and administration.

  • Interacts professionally with patient/family and involves patient/family in the formation of the plan of care.

  • Identifies and addresses psychosocial needs of patients and family; communicates with social service/discharge planner regarding both in hospital and post discharge needs.

  • Demonstrates an ability to be flexible, organized and function well under stressful situations.

Department Specific Summary:

  • Provides general direction to Surgical Services staff for daily operations, staffing, clinical activities, huddles, safety, and quality matters.

  • Implements and monitors adherence to evidence based clinical nursing practice consistent with Association of Operating Room Nurses (AORN), American Society of PeriAnesthesia Nurses (ASPAN), nursing research, organizational, and national practice standards.

  • Assigns and delegates patient care tasks as appropriate, considering staff members’ level of nursing experience, competency, and knowledge.

  • Formulates assignments and schedules.

  • Assist with payroll approval.

  • Will provide direct and indirect patient care in the Surgical Services setting when patient census and staffing require.

  • Adheres to professional guidelines for practice such as defined by the Wyoming State Board of Nursing, the American Nurses Association ANA, ASPAN, AORN and SGNA Scope and Standards of Practice.

  • Coordinates and supervises patient care.

  • Formulates a teaching plan based upon identified learning needs and evaluates effectiveness of learning. Family is included in teaching as appropriate.

    POSITION QUALIFICATIONS Education / Experience / Licenses and Certification

  • Current unrestricted Wyoming Registered Nurse Licensure.

  • BSN, preferred.

  • Minimum 3 years of acute care experience, required.

  • Minimum 2 years of supervisory experience, preferred.

  • Minimum 1 year experience in department-specific area, preferred.

  • BLS certification, required.

  • ACLS certification, required within 1 year position start date.

  • Specialty certification in related area, preferred.

  • PALS certification, required.

  • Minimum 2 years operating room or recovery room experience, preferred.
